Hey! So what I'm learning in life is that when something (or someone) sparks joy within you...stick with it! That is how I feel about this blog series: All Up In Your Closet! At first I was a lil scared to reach out to some of the dope individuals that we'll be featuring whose style I admire but once you kick fear in the butt...amazing things happen! Message: If you're afraid to do something...DO IT SCARED!!! Anyhoo...hope y'all are well and enjoy getting all up in Jessica Lauren's closet! ;-)
Peace and Blessings,
Jessica Lauren is the creator of Lifestyle + Inspirational blog NoRealJewelry.Com . She lives in Chicago but was born and raised on the Westside of Detroit. "I'm just a girl who got tired of hearing no--so I created my own yes!". You can catch her acting skills out on NBC's Chicago PD and a few national commercials. Later this summer she will be a guest on The Being Boss Podcast sharing tips on how to juggle freelance life, blogging, anxiety and everything in between. Side Note: this picture, in my opinion, displays who Jessica is (without having met her in person mind you!) fun, full of life and comfortable in her own skin!
Brownstone Closets: Hello Ms. Jessica Lauren!!! I cannot wait to meet you in person! So glad that we've "met" on IG! THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH for being BC's second "guest" for this blog series. After getting out of my own way, I decided to just go for what feels right to me and this feels AMAZING!
Brownstone Closets: Define your style.
Jessica Lauren: My style is pretty classic + simple. I'm super no fuss and low maintenance so I love a mean shift dress that I can just throw on! Easy does it for me. On the flip side, I definitely have a fun and artistic spirit so I love fun patterned pieces in classic silhouettes.
BC: Thongs, briefs, boy shorts?
JL: Girl for the most part, I do no draws or granny panties. There is no in between Lol! Tmi or naw?
BC: What does your closet consist of? Dresses? Pants? Plastic body suits? A mixture of all three?
JL: I actually just did a huge closet purge. I was so surprised at how emotional the whole process would be. I cried big tears because I was holding onto things that did absolutely nothing for me. Clothes from high school and college. Clothes that didn't fit. Clothes that were completely out of style. Growing up in the hood and with little money, you learn to hoard so to speak, because you're never too sure of when your next pair of shoes + clothes are coming from. I had to give myself permission to let that scarcity mindset go + embrace the fact that God has blessed me with the resources to get nice new things that I like. (And not feel guilty about it) I don't have to hoard my clothes anymore because I finally trust that God will always be there to provide all of my needs. Who knew that cleaning my closet would deepen my relationship with God? Crazy right?! Lol!
Anyway, I say all that to say that I am rebuilding my wardrobe. I got a few cute dresses from Asos recently. Now that I work from home I just want to throw something on and get to work, and dresses really do work for me. I'm going to try building a capsule wardrobe for this summer. I'm really interested in having a collection of curated clothes that are of good quality instead of spending $40 dollars here, $15 dollars here on fast fashion. I'm looking to add more quality to my closet.
BC: How long does it take for you to get dressed? Don’t say an hour!
JL: Girl it low-key takes me forever. I have to find the right music or podcast. I get so distracted by social media--I'm all like "ooohh I can InstaStory this!". I make a cup of coffee when I get ready (and sit it down somewhere so I spend time looking for it). Let's just say I get on my nerves when it's time to get dressed! Lol! But for the most part, i'd say it takes me a good hour and 15 minutes to get dressed. But when I had a 9-5 I could get ready in 45.
BC: Favorite item in your closet and why?
JL: My favorite item in my closet is my Cognac Envelope Clutch that I got a few years ago from Asos. It's my go to piece when I want my outfit to look a bit chicer.
BC: I channel Sade when I’m getting dressed, who do you channel? What do you do?
JL: I channel Solange + Tracee Ellis Ross hands down. Their style is so freaking effortless, cool and I love how they experiment with pieces. I am obsessed with their style!
BC: Any WIWT gone wrong moments?
JL: I have WIWT outfits gone wrong all the time. Lol! I'll have a bomb outfit idea and it just doesn't translate well on camera. I have this dope jumpsuit from Missguided that looks crazy in pictures. And even if my outfit is bomb.com something always happens during the shoot. Panties showing, lipstick on teeth, mud on heels--it just can get crazy as all get out but I love it so much. I take my own pictures and seeing the end result after shoot day drama is always fun!
BC: Paint us a picture of what your dream closet looks like?
JL: I have been digging a minimalist closet lately. I used to be obsessed with Khloe Kardashian and Kimora Lee Simmons closets but I've been loving the minimal movement lately. So my major closet crush right now is Shirley B Eniang I love how she has a collection for the season and showcases it on her wardrobe rack. Super chic and clean. Again I am about that super streamlined, no-fuss life.
BC: Fashion blogger that you’re crushin’ on right now?
JL: Ok can I be honest for a second? I get sucked into the comparison trap so HARD! You know what I'm talking about-- comparing your progress, followers, fashion sense, entire being (lol!) to someone else's. I ain't got time for that no more. So since I started NRJ, I make it a point to keep my eyes on my own paper. I don't really keep up with too many fashion bloggers because I want to make sure my content is true to me and I hate that sometimes I get stuck comparing myself to others. But I do have my favorite makeup, hair, business + lifestyle bloggers. I love @kiitana for hair--I wouldn't know how to crochet braid if it wasn't for her. I love @shirleybeniang for lifestyle and fashion. @xobritdear @imperfectconcepts @narshaco for business + design inspiration.
BC: What can we expect from No Real Jewelry this spring/summer?
JL: This spring + summer readers can expect to see more of what I wear during the week. I get such good feedback when I share what I wear throughout the week. It's a bit more work but I think readers get more outfit inspo when they get a weekly view.
